Six Quirky Things To Do In Stillwater

by Bill Clevlen

If you’re looking for things to do in Stillwater, Oklahoma – I’ve put together a list of six fun, you might even call them quirky, things to do while staying in town. Stillwater is a lively, bustling college town, home to Oklahoma Statue University and loaded with kind, friendly faces. You’ll love your time here whether it’s for part of a day or an extended trip.

1. Stand On An Olympic Podium at the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum

The National Wrestling Hall of Fame is located in Stillwater and full of interesting stories and artifacts that will keep the attention of any sports fan. Inside the museum, you’ll find at least two of the official championship podiums used in actual Olympic games. You can hop up on top and take a photo with your best wrestling pose!

The National Wrestling Hall of Fame & Museum is located at: 405 West Hall of Fame Avenue in Stillwater.

2. Be Blown Away By A Wall of Sound At Kicker Headquarters

Checking out the sound system in a custom classic car with Kicker Founder and CEO Steve Irby

Kicker has been making stereo speakers for decades and is recognized as one of the best in the world. Their headquarters in Stillwater are open to the public with a cool display of custom vehicles. You can learn how the company started from humble beginnings in a garage to a booming business with over 200 employees. No visit to Kicker is complete without standing in front of the “Wall Of Boom”. This unique collection of powerful speakers will show you the raw power of sound. (And don’t worry, it only lasts for about 20 seconds.)

Kicker Visitors Center is located at: 3100 North Husband Street.

3. Get A Specialty Pie at Original Hideaway Pizza

Hideaway Pizza has been an iconic hangout for locals and college students in Stillwater for many years. If you’re passing through, be sure to check out one of their unique speciality pizzas. They are constantly adding new varieties and experimenting with new combinations of flavors. Also be sure to take notice of all the kites on the wall and hanging from the ceiling throughout the entire restaurant. The Dermer Family, who still own and operate Hideaway are huge kite flying enthusiasts.

Original Hideaway Pizza is located at: 230 South Knoblock Street

4. Eat World Famous Cheese Fries at Eskimo Joes

Ok so the title isn’t so imaginative but the taste is off the charts. I totally get why everyone told me to try their famous cheese fries. They are delicious! Eskimo Joes is known around the world and their promotional product line is on par with Hard Rock Cafe in terms of sales. (You can find almost anything with their logo on it in the gift shop.) The food is great and the atmosphere is fun. If you have a chance to meet one of the co-founders – don’t miss the chance. They are hilarious and full of terrific stories.

Eskimo Joes is located at: 501 W. Elm Street.

5. Get An Old-Fashioned Shave At Everyman

Gentleman – this one’s for you. Depending on your age, you may remember when barber shops actually shaved customers with a hot towel and true razor blade. Everyman is a specialty shop in downtown Stillwater that still gives real shaves as well as facials and haircuts for men. Depending on the package you order, it takes about an hour and is amazingly refreshing! You can also enjoy coffee or pick up a new shirt! Watch the video below from my experience.

Everyman is located at: 713 S. Main Street.

6. Take A Picture With Two Transformers

I remember the Transformers cartoons as a kid but they’ve since been “transformed” into characters for the big screen. Stillwater has not one, but two life size Transformers in town that make great Instagrammable photo ops for your road trip. The statues are over 20 feet tall!

Optimus Prime is located at: 2207 E. 6th St and Bumblebee is at 5104 W. 6th Street.

Special thanks to The Atherton Hotel on the campus of Oklahoma State University for hosting my visit to Stillwater! First class all the way around!
