For many, Bristol is the gateway to southwest Virginia. It’s not only an historic town where visitors can stand in two different states at once – it’s also the birthplace of country music.
During my recent visit I stayed at the Sessions Hotel which served as my home base to explore Bristol’s many attractions. I found myself within walking distance of the town’s popular hot spots and a short drive to others.
In a town known for music history, the Sessions Hotel takes it quite seriously. As you walk through the doors, wander through the halls, and gaze around your guest room – music is the dominate theme. The key to your room looks like a cassette and a record player awaits you on your bed. (The staff select a record for you to enjoy but there are many others to choose from in the hotel lobby.).
Around the property are beautiful photos and carefully placed artwork. You’ll see images from the historic 1927 Bristol Sessions. Other decor in the room like replicas of vintage radios provide the rooms with a cozy, vintage vibe.
The building itself is historic – having been a grocery store in the early 1900s. The Sessions Hotel is actually made up of several restored buildings – one of which is now an on-site restaurant known as Southern Craft.
Perhaps its best feature – the hotel has an incredible upper deck with tables and chairs for lounging and entertainment. It’s a great place to enjoy the views as the sun comes up – or sets – on this historic town.
Things To Do in Bristol, Virginia
A short walk from the Sessions Hotel is the famous Burger Bar restaurant where legendary musician Hank Williams was last spotted alive.
Walking down State Street, you’ll find everything from ice cream shops to antique stores. You’ll see art galleries, locally owned restaurants, and don’t miss a really cool mural featuring some of country music’s founding fathers and musicians.
Around the block is the wonderful Birthplace of Country Music Museum. You’ll find a wide range of exhibits that feature one of a kind instruments; artifacts; and interactive displays and video presentations that explain why Bristol is hallowed ground for true country music fans.
One place not to miss is the famous Blackbird Bakery with its fresh donuts and other sweet treats. I bet I had a dozen readers insist I make time to visit and I’m glad I did!
Racing is a big deal in this part of the country and one of the most popular spots for NASCAR is the Bristol Motor Speedway. Even if you’re not a die-hard racing fan, a tour of the speedway is still so interesting. Guided tours are available throughout the year and you’ll have the ability to be on the actual race track and see behind the scenes of these enormous sporting events.
Among Bristol’s many things to see and experience – don’t forget to (safely) walk from Virginia into Tennessee! Take note of the cool plates in the middle of the road that let you know which side of the state you’re on.
